The legend of Lake Pátka

Experiences at the foothills of the Vértes mountain

The legend

Once upon a time there used to live Romans and Celts here,
In the forests and on the fields, as the legend goes.
In the valley on the stones centuries-old legends tell about two families,
A young couple, and an ancient lake.
On the banks of the river – to the right and to the left – there stood a castle long ago,
And in the middle of the castle two small children were growing up peacefully.
The two young children went for a walk one day and they found each other on the bank of the river.
The two secretly walked together from then on, weaving dreams in great love.
As time went by, the girl became a young lady and the young man wanted to propose her.
They went to the father, hand in hand, to ask for his consent but he father did not consent to the marriage.
He wanted a nobleman who stands the test. Our nobleman stands the test along the way,
However the one who proposes the girl in a more striking way will win her hand in the end.
Stones are brought, the dam is built, and where formerly only a field stood, now there is a lake.
The axes are working, the ship is carved, the women sew the sail.
When the day comes, the ship sails away to propose the girl.
The ship stops on the bank of the Virgin Castle.
The father is relieved, he givees in to her daughter and her fiance who sail away on the lake.

The ’Emperor Water Dam’ is a unique archaeological site of the settlement and one of the special monuments of Roman Pannonia. The remains of the ancient stone dam can still be seen today. To the north of the dam, the Pátkai Reservoir, with a water surface of more than 300 hectares, can rightly be called the “little brother” of Lake Velence and is one of the most popular fishing paradises in the region. The 317-hectare reservoir stretches north-south throughout the settlement. The river`s depth is varied, but is usually 2.5-3 metres deep. The western side of the shore is somewhat steeper.
In addition to fishing, the lake and its surroundings provide an ideal recreational opportunity for those who like hiking, running, horseback riding and cycling – where one can roam the scenic landscape on our recently inaugurated hiking trails. Sport fishing is also possible on Lake Róth. The lakes are also worth visiting for those who want to relax and admire the beauty of nature. The surroundings of both lakes are ideal places to observe the aquatic birdlife, which is especially spectacular during bird migration.
Horseback riding and carriage rides are also available in Pátka, and sleigh rides can be arranged in winter. Hunting enthusiasts can indulge their passion on the outskirts of the village which is rich in both small and large game. The ’Rose Festival’ in August and the ‚Vintage Parade’ in September are outstanding events among many others organized in the village throughout the year. You can
find out more about the actual events on our website: www.patka.hu.
There is a 2-paddle-rated stop 150 metres from the centre of the village, at the end of ‚Gál-köz’, with a newly built boathouse, a fireplace and free WiFi. The boathouse is home to the local tourist information centre. The facility is accessible from a barrier-free, paved car park. The building also has a roof terrace that can be visited outside of open hours, from where you can admire the beauty of the landscape.
